Radar parts
Within the field of “crash avoidance” radar systems play a key role. Not only does the radar detect objects, this detection is being more and more integrated into an active brake assist function. In the coming years a strong growth is forecasted as the system will become available on a wider range of cars. In the truck market the growth is also driven by legislation.
Functional parts within the radar unit
Next to advanced electronics and software, the radar unit also requires complex and high precision functional parts which are produced by Helvoet.
The main current production is a very accurate and stable part made out of special phenolic material executed with a metal coating on the outside.
The parts are made by injection molding, for which a high tech two cavity mold has been designed and built. Each cavity consists of an 8 segment expandable core, closing off with the highest precision.
After the injection molding process a thin layer, typically 2 micron meter, of metal is brought onto the part by an in-house physical vapour disposition coating process. This type of coating of plastic parts is a special process by Helvoet, in which the company has many years of experience. (Other examples of coated parts are gold plated mirrors used in bar code scanners)
Due to the combination of thermoset injection molding technology and our expertise with coating under the same roof, we offer systems rather than a component, in this way creating a unique extra value to our customers.
During the whole development phase several tests are done at our Technology center to develop the parts in cooperation with and as a support to our customers.
